An Answered Prayer
By Walter Gemmell
I am president of a 501C corporation which represents 3 major community service organizations which serve well in excess of 20,000 individuals annually. We have been working on a project to build a community service center which will house all 3 organizations each of which have specific needs for relocating. These needs include one facility that is in a flood zone and high crime area. The building is in disrepair and requires continuing maintenance, and is inadequate to deliver quality services to a representative percent of the community. Another of the organizations has eleven employees in office space designed for four people and with no space for delivering their services. They must rely on finding space as needed from other organizations throughout the community. Lastly, the third organization is actually paying for more office space than they need; however, they have agencies within their organization which need to provide education and training and could utilize those areas which are provided in the proposed new facility. The new facility would provide centralized service to the community through 3 organizations which work closely together in a location with adequate parking and proper number of restroom facilities which comply with the law. This centralized location would also provide for a more economical operation through shared services ie; single telephone system, IT system single receptionist and centralized purchasing. We began work on this project 5 years ago performing detailed research on specific needs of each agency, examining cost saving measures, visiting other communities where similar operations were in existence to determine their successes and failures in an effort to avoid mistakes. Unfortunately when we were ready to begin our feasibility study and our capital campaign we made the mistake of no properly checking the firm which we hired to run the campaign. By the time we were able to separate from this problem the economy started its downturn. We were now faced with the decision of whether to hire a reputable fund raising firm which had a record of great success in our community over a long period of time or wait for the economy to recover. The cost for a new feasibility study would be $25,000.Our local bank offered to pay a portion if the 3 organizations were resolute and would pledge a good portion of the fee. We had mixed reactions from the 3 boards and thought at that point we may have to scrap the whole project if we could not at least do a feasibility study. I personally have prayed for guidance throughout the term of this project and I know some of our other members have as well. My prayers increased in intensity 2 weeks ago when it appeared our past work had been in vain. I notified the consulting firm that it looked as though we might not move forward. I was really down in the dumps last Monday when I received a message that someone had heard about our plight and offered to give each of our boards $5,000 to take care of our share of the feasibility study cost. I am convinced that was an answer to prayer
